Sauna Hype

The claim

Sauna lowers your blood pressure.

Early. Blood pressure falls for a while after a sauna, and that short dip is what the popular numbers measure. Trials lasting weeks found little or no lasting drop from heat on its own, while one small trial found a clear drop when the sauna followed exercise.

Updated Sep 24, 2026 · 5 studies reviewed

Some human data and a plausible mechanism. It needs better trials before anyone can lean on it.

The most quoted numbers come from Kuopio, where 102 adults with at least one heart risk factor sat in a 73°C sauna for 30 minutes. Measured after they came out, systolic pressure had fallen from 137 to 130 mmHg and diastolic from 82 to 75, and systolic pressure was still below its starting level half an hour later.Source 1 · Clinical trialAcute effects of sauna bathing on cardiovascular functionLaukkanen T, Kunutsor SK, Zaccardi F, et al.. Readings taken inside the sauna vary with the heat and the method. Systolic pressure fell by 16 mmHg over 30 minutes at 73°C in one crossover study, while in 19 adults at 93°C systolic and diastolic pressure both climbed steadily and dropped below baseline only after they left.Source 3 · Crossover trialHeat Stress and Cardiovascular, Hormonal, and Heat Shock Proteins in HumansIguchi M, Littmann AE, Chang SH, et al.. Longer trials of heat alone have mostly come up empty. 1. EvidenceWhat kind of evidence exists in people?

  3. MagnitudeDoes the claim match the size of the effect?

    12/25

The popular figure is a fall from 137 to 130 mmHg that researchers measured after people left a 30-minute sauna, and the study had no control group.Source 1 · Clinical trialAcute effects of sauna bathing on cardiovascular functionLaukkanen T, Kunutsor SK, Zaccardi F, et al.. Put it to use

Expect a short dip in blood pressure after a sauna. For a lasting effect, the best trial evidence pairs the sauna with exercise: eight weeks of workouts followed by 15 minutes in the heat lowered systolic pressure by 8 mmHg more than the workouts alone.Source 6 · Randomized trialEffects of regular sauna bathing in conjunction with exercise on cardiovascular function: a multi-arm, randomized controlled trialLee E, Kolunsarka I, Kostensalo J, et al..
