Sauna Hype

How we rate

The Hype Dial measures how far a claim has drifted from its evidence.

Every claim on Sauna Hype gets a reading between 0 and 100 degrees of hype, written °H. We add four scores to get it. Each score runs from 0 to 25 and answers one question about the claim and the research behind it.

A claim near zero says what careful studies in people found, at a dose people use. A claim near a hundred describes an effect nobody has measured. Most of what you hear lands in between, and the four parts show you where the drift comes in.

Four questions set every reading

Part 1 · 0 to 25

Evidence

What kind of evidence exists in people?

  1. 0Randomized trials or meta-analyses in humans that measured the outcome itself.
  2. 6Large prospective cohorts that followed people to hard outcomes like deaths or diagnoses.
  3. 12Small or short human trials, or studies that only moved a marker in the blood.
  4. 18Animal, cell or mechanism studies with little human data.
  5. 25No evidence at all, or trials that looked and found nothing.

Part 2 · 0 to 25

Consistency

Has the finding held up?

  1. 0Independent teams found it again in different groups of people.
  2. 8The results agree, though most come from one team or one population.
  3. 16It rests on a single study, or the studies disagree.
  4. 25Better studies have contradicted it.

Part 3 · 0 to 25

Magnitude

Does the claim match the size of the effect?

  1. 0The claim states the effect the studies measured.
  2. 8It quotes a relative number with no absolute context, or rounds up.
  3. 16It inflates the effect or drops the context that shrinks it.
  4. 25It describes an effect nobody has measured.

Part 4 · 0 to 25

Dose

Does the studied protocol match how people use it?

  1. 0Researchers studied it the way people do it at home.
  2. 8Close, with differences that matter, like frequency or temperature.
  3. 16Far from typical use, like an hour in 14°C water or two hour-long saunas a day.
  4. 25No relevant dose has ever been studied.

Five zones turn the number into a word

  1. Solid019°HGood human studies back it, and the claim says what they found.
  2. Likely2039°HThe evidence points this way. It still has gaps a careful reader should know about.
  3. Early4059°HSome human data and a plausible mechanism. It needs better trials before anyone can lean on it.
  4. Stretched6079°HA real finding has been pulled well past what the study showed.
  5. Hot air80100°HNothing solid supports it, or the evidence points the other way.

Independent teams found it again in different groups of people.

2/25

The claim states the effect the studies measured.

Solid

Good human studies back it, and the claim says what they found.

We hold ourselves to these rules

  • The full paper gets read whenever we can reach it, because abstracts rarely spell out a study's limits. When only the abstract was available, the study page says so.
  • Every figure on the site links to the paper it came from.
  • Readings rate the claim as people say it. A study can be excellent while the popular version of it reads 70°H.
  • When new research lands, the reading moves. The date at the top of each claim shows the last check.
  • Sauna Hype carries no affiliate links. Sauna Monthly, our sister magazine, earns commissions on some products it reviews, and we mark every link that goes there.
  • Send corrections to mail@adambognar.com. We fix errors and note the change on the page.

The dial has limits of its own

A reading is an editorial judgment made with a published rubric, and two careful readers could land a few degrees apart. The zones matter more than the exact number. Nothing here is medical advice. If you're pregnant or have a heart condition, talk to your doctor before you start regular heat or cold.
