The claim
“A sauna session is as good as a workout.”
Stretched. A hot sauna raises your heart rate about as much as moderate cycling, which is where the idea comes from. The heart speeds up without pumping more blood per beat, and no trial has shown that sauna alone builds fitness the way exercise does.

The research found this
Heat makes the heart work harder. In 50 adults using saunas with water thrown on the stones, heart rate climbed from 79 to 121 beats a minute across a 10-minute bout.Source 1 · Clinical trialTemperature and humidity independently influence thermoregulatory responses during Finnish sauna bathingLaatikainen-Raussi I, Mikkola T, Ihalainen JK, et al.. The extra pumping comes from speed alone. In a head-to-head test in 20 young adults, three 10-minute bouts in a traditional sauna raised cardiac output from 5.0 to 7.3 liters a minute while the volume pumped with each beat went only from 70.2 to 71.2 milliliters.Source 3 · Crossover trialComparison of thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and immune responses to different passive heat therapy modalitiesAtencio JK, Reed EL, Wiedenfeld Needham K, et al.. One randomized crossover trial compared the two directly. Ten healthy women spent 45 minutes in an infrared sauna and 45 minutes cycling on separate days, and a day of rest served as the comparison. The sauna raised ear temperature more than cycling did, and cycling raised breathing rate more.Source 5 · Crossover trialInfrared sauna as exercise-mimetic? Over weeks, exercise did most of the work in the one trial that tested both. In eight weeks of supervised training in Jyväskylä, exercise raised estimated fitness by 6.2 mL/kg/min against no training, and 15 minutes of sauna after each session added another 2.7.Source 6 · Randomized trialEffects of regular sauna bathing in conjunction with exercise on cardiovascular function: a multi-arm, randomized controlled trialLee E, Kolunsarka I, Kostensalo J, et al.. EvidenceWhat kind of evidence exists in people?
14/25The evidence is acute lab studies and small trials. A randomized crossover in 10 women compared a 45-minute infrared session with 45 minutes of cycling, and its authors put the sauna's effects down to heat more than to anything exercise-like.Source 5 · Crossover trialInfrared sauna as exercise-mimetic? MagnitudeDoes the claim match the size of the effect?
22/25A 25-minute sauna at 93°C loaded the heart like 60 to 100 watts of cycling.Source 2 · Clinical trialThe blood pressure and heart rate during sauna bath correspond to cardiac responses during submaximal dynamic exerciseKetelhut S, Ketelhut R. The claim drifts from the data here
Matching exercise on heart rate is a narrow kind of equivalence. In a sauna the heart speeds up while each beat pumps the same volume, and nobody has run a trial of a sauna habit against an exercise habit for fitness or long-term health.Source 3 · Crossover trialComparison of thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and immune responses to different passive heat therapy modalitiesAtencio JK, Reed EL, Wiedenfeld Needham K, et al.. Some of the popular support comes from hot-tub research. “Using a sauna four to seven times a week halves your risk of dying from heart disease.”
In one Finnish cohort, men who took four to seven saunas a week died of heart disease at about half the rate of men who went once a week. Later analyses of the same men found a smaller gap, and the link was missing in the fittest men and in women who went two or three times a week.

“A sauna after training boosts your endurance.”
Post-training saunas expand plasma volume and help athletes cope with heat, and six runners lasted 32% longer in a run to exhaustion. A randomized crossover trial of 13 men found no extra gain in hemoglobin mass or aerobic fitness over training alone.

“A sauna session burns hundreds of calories.”
Measured by indirect calorimetry, an hour of passive heat in 40°C water burned 61 kcal more than rest, and an hour of moderate cycling burned 556 more. The big sauna calorie counts come from heart-rate watches, which read a heat-driven pulse as exercise.
