Sauna Hype

The claim

Saunas are dangerous if you have heart disease.

Early. People with stable coronary disease or heart failure tolerated sauna sessions in small studies, and experts reserve the warning for specific conditions such as unstable chest pain or a recent heart attack. The reported sauna deaths mostly involved existing heart disease, often with alcohol.

Some human data and a plausible mechanism. It needs better trials before anyone can lean on it.

The research found this

Finnish and international reviews give similar advice. A 2006 Finnish review found no particular risk in the sauna for people with coronary disease or heart failure whose condition was stable and treated.Source 1 · ReviewHealth effects and risks of sauna bathingKukkonen-Harjula K, Kauppinen K. Studies of heart patients in the sauna are small. A study in Bern gave two 80°C sauna sessions and a 12°C plunge to 25 men with chronic heart failure or coronary disease and to 12 healthy men. Systolic pressure reached its low point six minutes into the sauna, and nobody had complex heart rhythm problems.Source 4 · Clinical trialAcute effects of Finnish sauna and cold-water immersion on haemodynamic variables and autonomic nervous system activity in patients with heart failureRadtke T, Poerschke D, Wilhelm M, et al.. Deaths in saunas are rare and cluster in people who already have heart disease. 3. MagnitudeDoes the claim match the size of the effect?

    15/25

The claim applies a risk tied to specific conditions to everyone with heart disease. In the 1970s, sudden deaths in Finnish saunas ran at about one per 400,000 baths among men over 60, and far lower in younger men.Source 1 · ReviewHealth effects and risks of sauna bathingKukkonen-Harjula K, Kauppinen K. 4. DoseDoes the studied protocol match how people use it?

    10/25

Much of the heart-failure data comes from 60°C infrared sessions, and per session an infrared cabin put less heat load on the body than a traditional sauna.Source 6 · Randomized trialWaon Therapy for Managing Chronic Heart Failure – Results From a Multicenter Prospective Randomized WAON-CHF Study –Tei C, Imamura T, Kinugawa K, et al.. The claim drifts from the data here

The blanket warning lumps stable, treated patients together with people who have unstable chest pain or a recent heart attack. Expert lists put the risk in the second group, and the death reports point to alcohol.Source 1 · ReviewHealth effects and risks of sauna bathingKukkonen-Harjula K, Kauppinen K. Getting through a supervised session is a lower bar than proving safety over years. Most patient studies covered a single visit or a few weeks, and one found reduced blood flow to the heart muscle on scans even when patients felt fine.Source 5 · Clinical trialSauna-induced myocardial ischemia in patients with coronary artery diseaseGiannetti N, Juneau M, Arsenault A, et al..
