Sauna Hype

The claim

Regular sauna use lowers your sperm count.

Likely. In a small Italian study, two 15-minute sessions a week at 80–90°C for three months cut sperm count and motility in 10 men. Every measured change had reversed six months after they stopped.

The research found this

The main study comes from Padova, Italy. Ten men with normal semen took two 15-minute sessions a week in a Finnish sauna at 80–90°C for three months. The researchers took measurements at four points between the first session and six months after the last.Source 1 · Clinical trialSeminal and molecular evidence that sauna exposure affects human spermatogenesisGarolla A, Torino M, Sartini B, et al.. Tests on the sperm showed poorer DNA packaging, and the share with normal histone-to-protamine exchange fell from 78.7% to 69.0%.Source 1 · Clinical trialSeminal and molecular evidence that sauna exposure affects human spermatogenesisGarolla A, Torino M, Sartini B, et al.. One session can lower sperm numbers for a few weeks. After a single 20-minute sauna at 85°C, sperm numbers fell within a week and took about 5 weeks to return to normal.Source 5 · Clinical trialThe Effect of a Single Sauna Exposure on SpermatozoaBrown-woodman PDC, Post EJ, Gass GC, et al.. Hot baths lower sperm output too. How the reading adds up

  1. EvidenceWhat kind of evidence exists in people?

    12/25

The main evidence is a three-month experiment in 10 men with no control group, backed by shorter studies.Source 1 · Clinical trialSeminal and molecular evidence that sauna exposure affects human spermatogenesisGarolla A, Torino M, Sartini B, et al.. Archives of Andrology, 1984.Read the paperPubMed ↗ These studies measured sperm directly.

  2. ConsistencyHas the finding held up?

    8/25

Separate teams found sperm numbers falling after exposures that ranged from one 20-minute session to three months of twice-weekly use, and hot-water experiments agree.Source 5 · Clinical trialThe Effect of a Single Sauna Exposure on SpermatozoaBrown-woodman PDC, Post EJ, Gass GC, et al.. 3. MagnitudeDoes the claim match the size of the effect?

    6/25

The claim matches the measured direction and leaves out the recovery. By a review's extraction of the Italian data, sperm concentration fell from 89 to 31 million per milliliter, and all changes were gone six months after the last session.Source 2 · Systematic reviewClinical Effects of Regular Dry Sauna Bathing: A Systematic ReviewHussain J, Cohen M. 4. DoseDoes the studied protocol match how people use it?

    4/25

The Italian men took two 15-minute sessions a week at 80–90°C, which looks like ordinary home use.Source 1 · Clinical trialSeminal and molecular evidence that sauna exposure affects human spermatogenesisGarolla A, Torino M, Sartini B, et al.. Human Reproduction, 2013.Read the paperPubMed ↗

The claim drifts from the data here

The claim leaves out that the effect is temporary. In the Italian study every measured change had reversed six months after the last session, and after one session sperm numbers recovered in about 5 weeks.Source 1 · Clinical trialSeminal and molecular evidence that sauna exposure affects human spermatogenesisGarolla A, Torino M, Sartini B, et al.. It also slides easily from sperm count to fertility. The one fertility cohort found no clear effect of sauna on time to pregnancy, and it had few frequent users.Source 9 · Cohort studyMale personal heat exposures and fecundability: A preconception cohort studyMcKinnon CJ, Joglekar DJ, Hatch EE, et al.. Put it to use

If you and a partner are trying to conceive, or a test has shown a low sperm count, talk to your doctor about pausing saunas and hot baths. Counts recovered within about five weeks after a single session and within six months after a three-month course.Source 5 · Clinical trialThe Effect of a Single Sauna Exposure on SpermatozoaBrown-woodman PDC, Post EJ, Gass GC, et al..
