The claim

Infrared heat penetrates 3 to 4 cm into your body.

Stretched. Sauna sellers were promising an inch and a half of penetration by 1998, with no study behind it. When researchers finally put probes in muscle, warming fell from 3.0°C at 1.4 cm to 1.1°C at 3.4 cm, and core temperature did not move.

A real finding has been pulled well past what the study showed.

People say it in places like these

  • Infrared sauna brands

Infrared light penetrates 3 to 4 cm into your body and heats you from the inside out.

  • Health Mate ad (1998)

Infrared heat reaches an inch and a half below the skin.

  • US patent

Infrared penetrates about an inch and a half, and the deep penetration causes weight loss in fat.

The research found this

The one direct test put temperature probes into muscle. Ten adults sat for 45 minutes in a commercial far-infrared cabin while probes read muscle temperature at three depths and a swallowed pill tracked core temperature.Source 1 · Clinical trialMuscle temperature increases during a single far infrared sauna session without changes in intestinal temperatureReed EL, Uzoekwe CC, Atencio JK, et al.. Journal of Applied Physiology, 2025.Read the paperPubMed ↗ The thermostat started at 45°C and was then set to 65°C so the emitters stayed on for 93% of the session.

Warming fell off with depth. Muscle rose 3.0°C at 1.4 cm below the skin and 1.1°C at 3.4 cm.Source 1 · Clinical trialMuscle temperature increases during a single far infrared sauna session without changes in intestinal temperatureReed EL, Uzoekwe CC, Atencio JK, et al.. Journal of Applied Physiology, 2025.Read the paperPubMed ↗ The authors defined effective thermal penetration as the depth where heating had dropped by 63%, and they put it at 2.4 cm. The pill showed no change in core temperature, while mean skin temperature rose 6.2°C.

Infrared radiation is absorbed near the surface. Germany's Federal Office for Radiation Protection says near infrared (IR-A, 780–1,400 nm) reaches up to about 5 mm into skin, and the longer IR-B and IR-C bands are absorbed mostly in the epidermis.Source 2 · RegulatorAnwendungen von Infrarot-Strahlung in Medizin und Wellness [Applications of infrared radiation in medicine and wellness]Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz. Traditional saunas warm muscle as well. In one study, 40 minutes at 80°C raised muscle temperature by 1.95°C and esophageal temperature by 1.5°C.Source 4 · Clinical trialThe vascular response to acute sauna heating is similar in young and middle-aged adultsLeach OK, Strong K, Mack GW, et al.. How the reading adds up

  1. EvidenceWhat kind of evidence exists in people?

    16/25

One small study has measured it. Researchers put probes into the muscle of 10 adults during 45 minutes in a commercial far-infrared cabin.Source 1 · Clinical trialMuscle temperature increases during a single far infrared sauna session without changes in intestinal temperatureReed EL, Uzoekwe CC, Atencio JK, et al.. 2. ConsistencyHas the finding held up?

The 3–4 cm figure was never a measurement. It appears as background in a 2015 study of infrared sauna after training, and the authors of the probe study note that the claim leans heavily on one review.Source 7 · Crossover trialEffects of far-infrared sauna bathing on recovery from strength and endurance training sessions in menMero A, Tornberg J, Mäntykoski M, et al.. 3. MagnitudeDoes the claim match the size of the effect?

    22/25

Muscle warmed 3.0°C at 1.4 cm and 1.1°C at 3.4 cm, and the authors put the effective penetration, where heating had fallen by 63%, at 2.4 cm.Source 1 · Clinical trialMuscle temperature increases during a single far infrared sauna session without changes in intestinal temperatureReed EL, Uzoekwe CC, Atencio JK, et al.. The claim drifts from the data here

The claim blurs how far the light goes with how far the warmth spreads. The radiation stops in the outer millimeters of skin, and the warmth below it fades with each centimeter.Source 2 · RegulatorAnwendungen von Infrarot-Strahlung in Medizin und Wellness [Applications of infrared radiation in medicine and wellness]Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz. It also implies a deeper effect on the body than the data show. Core temperature stayed flat in both studies of typical infrared sessions.Source 1 · Clinical trialMuscle temperature increases during a single far infrared sauna session without changes in intestinal temperatureReed EL, Uzoekwe CC, Atencio JK, et al.. Put it to use

Use an infrared cabin if you like the gentler air, and expect it to warm the outer few centimeters of muscle by one to three degrees.Source 1 · Clinical trialMuscle temperature increases during a single far infrared sauna session without changes in intestinal temperatureReed EL, Uzoekwe CC, Atencio JK, et al..
