Sauna Hype

The claim

Infrared saunas work better than traditional saunas.

Hot air. No trial has compared infrared and traditional saunas on any health outcome. In the one head-to-head physiology study, a typical infrared session left core temperature unchanged while a traditional sauna raised it 0.4°C.

People say it in places like these

  • Infrared sauna brands

Infrared heats your body directly, so you get more benefit at a gentler temperature.

  • Borealis Massage Therapy

An infrared sauna makes two to three times the sweat of a conventional one.

The research found this

Researchers in Oregon compared a far-infrared cabin with a traditional sauna in the same 20 healthy young adults. A hot bath served as a third condition, and the sessions were at least a week apart.Source 1 · Crossover trialComparison of thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and immune responses to different passive heat therapy modalitiesAtencio JK, Reed EL, Wiedenfeld Needham K, et al.. American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 2025.Read the paperPubMed ↗ The traditional sauna ran three 10-minute rounds with the thermostat at 80°C, and the infrared session lasted 45 minutes. A calibrated probe found the air cooler than either thermostat: 66°C where the traditional one read 78°C, and 45°C where the infrared one read 57°C.

The traditional sauna put more strain on the body. Core temperature rose 0.4°C in the traditional sauna and did not move in the infrared cabin (P = 0.02), and skin warmed 8.3°C against 6.1°C.Source 1 · Crossover trialComparison of thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and immune responses to different passive heat therapy modalitiesAtencio JK, Reed EL, Wiedenfeld Needham K, et al.. Only the hot bath moved cytokines or immune cells.

Run hotter, an infrared cabin can load the body the way a traditional sauna does. The clinical case for infrared rests mainly on Japanese Waon therapy for heart failure, which means 15 minutes in a 60°C far-infrared sauna and then 30 minutes resting under a warm blanket. The dial reads 83°H for four reasons

How the reading adds up

22 + 18 + 25 + 18 = 83°H

  1. EvidenceWhat kind of evidence exists in people?

    22/25

The only direct comparison is a single-session crossover study of 20 young adults, and it measured heat strain.Source 1 · Crossover trialComparison of thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and immune responses to different passive heat therapy modalitiesAtencio JK, Reed EL, Wiedenfeld Needham K, et al.. 2. ConsistencyHas the finding held up?

    18/25

That study found the infrared cabin the milder of the two.Source 1 · Crossover trialComparison of thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and immune responses to different passive heat therapy modalitiesAtencio JK, Reed EL, Wiedenfeld Needham K, et al.. 3. MagnitudeDoes the claim match the size of the effect?

    25/25

"Better" describes a result nobody has measured. Most clinical infrared data come from one Japanese research network treating heart failure, and the Finnish evidence for traditional saunas comes from different people and different outcomes.Source 4 · Systematic reviewFar-infrared saunas for treatment of cardiovascular risk factors: summary of published evidenceBeever R. 4. DoseDoes the studied protocol match how people use it?

    18/25

Single sessions of each type have been studied at common settings, and the infrared cabin's air measured 45°C while its thermostat read 57°C.Source 1 · Crossover trialComparison of thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and immune responses to different passive heat therapy modalitiesAtencio JK, Reed EL, Wiedenfeld Needham K, et al.. The claim drifts from the data here

The pitch says infrared heats the body more directly at a gentler air temperature. At common settings the gentler air meant less heating, and core temperature stayed flat in both studies that measured it.Source 1 · Crossover trialComparison of thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and immune responses to different passive heat therapy modalitiesAtencio JK, Reed EL, Wiedenfeld Needham K, et al.. Put it to use

Choose the type you will use often at a heat that makes you sweat. An infrared cabin matches the heat load of a traditional sauna only when it runs hotter than the usual 45–60°C. In one study, 45 minutes at 65°C raised core temperature by 1.4°C, and 2 of 12 people stopped early.Source 8 · Systematic reviewClinical Effects of Regular Dry Sauna Bathing: A Systematic ReviewHussain J, Cohen M. People also ask

Is infrared or traditional sauna better for your heart?

Why does an infrared sauna feel less hot?

The air is cooler. In one study the infrared cabin's air measured 45°C while its thermostat read 57°C, and the traditional sauna's air measured 66°C.Source 1 · Crossover trialComparison of thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and immune responses to different passive heat therapy modalitiesAtencio JK, Reed EL, Wiedenfeld Needham K, et al..
